PERFORMANCE UPDATE: Tonight’s performance has been postponed and will be rescheduled to a later date.
Sawtooth Productions will present a free reading of Paula Vogel’s Pulitzer Prize winning play How I Learned to Drive as part of their ongoing series at The Argyros. Jon Kane will direct the cast, featuring Courtney Loving, Richard Rush, Page Klune, Chris Carwithen and Rika Pere.
The play premiered Off-Broadway at the Vineyard Theatre in 1997. Vogel received the 1998 Pulitzer Prize for Drama for the work. The story follows the strained, sexual relationship between Lil’ Bit and her Aunt’s husband, Uncle Peck, from her pre-adolescence through her teenage years into college and beyond. Using the metaphor of driving and the issues of pedophilia, incest, and misogyny, the play explores the ideas of control and manipulation.
“The work begins with a comic blitheness and detachment that immediately disarm. Then before you’re even aware of it, you’ve fallen into dark, decidedly uncomfortable territory, and it’s way too late to pull back.” – The New York Times
The performance is free and will be held in the lobby. Free wine and cookies will be served.
