Jayanthi Raman Dance Company - Navarasa Kalinga Nartana

The Argyros Presents the Jayanthi Raman Dance Company, performing “Navarasa Kalinga Nartana”

with Chau dancers from Delhi, India and from JRDC dancers

Conceived and choreographed by nationally reputed award winning choreographer Jayanthi Raman, this dance production is unique in its concept, instrumentation, and choreography. The production showcases the theme of Navarasa – the nine moods codified in dance literature, Natya Sastra. Performed by Raman and company repertoire male and female dancers, this unique dance theater production takes us on a journey through a myriad of emotions, encompassing the nine moods or the navarasa. The theme is overlaid on the story of Lord Krishna’s battle and triumph over the snake Kalinga or Kaliya. The battle between the snake Kaliya and Lord Krishna has been told through many generations. Choreographed in classical Bharatha Natyam, and Chau classical dance styles, as well as traditional folk dances, the vibrant and energetic dance theater is accessible and suitable for all ages.

Jayanthi Raman is founder and teacher of the premier institution of Indian dance - NATYA Dance Academy, based in Portland, Oregon, and Redmond/Bothell, WA, training aspiring students. The dance company and academy enhance cultural diversity by bringing Indian classical dance of highest quality through performances and outreach events influencing the cultural scene. Jayanthi’s artistry, mentorship, and advocacy continue to improve the accessibility, vitality, and appreciation of traditional arts.

Jayanthi Raman Dance Company productions are exceptionally professional with elaborate costuming, music, dance, and multimedia elements incorporated in a stunningly beautiful manner. JRDC is the only Indian Dance Company in the Northwest presenting professional dancers and musicians in major productions and on local and national tours.

“Few dancers communicate effectively across the wide gulfs of cultural difference. Jayanthi Raman is one. Even a viewer conditioned by American culture can recognize what sets Raman’s dancing apart. Technique, expressiveness, acting ability, musicality – just as in a ballet.” – The Oregonian
