HANUKKAH SPECTACULAR
A reading of a play-in-process by Max Posner

Presented by Sun Valley Playwright's Residency

Former Sundance Fellow Max Posner (The Treasurer) returns to Idaho to share the new family reckoning-showbiz comedy mash up about contemporary Jewish identity he has been writing as Sun Valley Playwright’s Residency’s 2024-2025 Resident Playwright.

Set over a 3-day workshop of a new play in a conference room at a talent agency in midtown Manhattan, a handful of Jewish artists are grasping at straws. On the threshold, at an inflection point, they weather unprecedented storms of ambivalence. Against their better judgement they go head-to-head with buried family traumas, NYC, God of the Old Testament, nuclear tribalism, and the power of theatre. Will they make it out in one piece? And should they?

General admission tickets are free of charge; reservations required; more information at www.sunvalleyplaywrights.org.

Vienna Boys Choir

Vienna Boys Choir

  • The Vienna Boys Choir, one of the world's oldest and most renowned choirs, traces its roots back to 1296 with the establishment of Vienna's Imperial Chapel. In 1498, Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I officially founded a Court Chapel, ensuring boys were part of the singers and laying the groundwork for the modern choir. Today, this former imperial ensemble operates as a private, non-profit organization, offering primary and grammar school education to 330 boys and girls aged six to nineteen, with a strong emphasis on choral music and singing. Their UNESCO-listed education is accessible to all, irrespective of origin, gender, nationality, or religion.

The four boys' choirs are incredibly active, performing nearly 300 concerts annually for almost half a million people. Since 1924, they've embarked on over 1000 tours across 100 countries, delivering a remarkable 29,000 concerts. They regularly sing mass in Vienna's Imperial Chapel alongside members of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and the Vienna State Opera's men's chorus. They've also graced stages with celebrated conductors like Zubin Mehta and Riccardo Muti, and are featured at prestigious events such as the Salzburg Festival and the Vienna Philharmonic's New Year's Concert. The choir also partners with UNICEF and other charities.

In 2023, the Vienna Boys Choir marked its 525th anniversary with special releases including a live album and a 21-CD box set. The following year, both the Vienna Boys Choir and the Vienna Girls Choir were honored with the European Culture Award. Erasmus Baumgartner has served as the Artistic Director since 2023, while Erich Arthold is the Choir's President.

Teton Gravity Research 'Pressure Drop’

Pressure Drop is the latest chapter in a 30-year journey—forged from a dream, fueled with cash from commercial fishing in Alaska, and driven by an obsession with life on the edge.

This film follows the world’s best skiers and snowboarders, alongside the next generation, through Alaskan spines, stacked pillow lines, massive cliffs, giant couloirs, deep powder, and insane jumps. From Norway to British Columbia, California to Alaska, and home in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, each line becomes a brushstroke in the art of descent.

Pressure Drop captures that fleeting space between calm and chaos—when breath slows, vision sharpens, and the mountain demands everything. It’s the moment before gravity takes over.

For three decades, we’ve stood at the edge—where fear meets flow and everything else fades. Pressure Drop continues the tradition of what it means to dedicate your life to the fall line.

Locations: Jackson Hole, Wyoming, Lofoten Islands, Norway, Valdez, Alaska, Grand Targhee, Wyoming, Interior British Columbia, Haines, Alaska, Palisades Tahoe, California.

The Robert Cray Band
Nov

The Robert Cray Band

  • Robert Cray, a true icon spanning blues, soul, and rock, began his musical journey after being inspired by The Beatles and Jimi Hendrix. From his early days forming a garage band to sharing stages with legends like Albert Collins at his high school graduation, Cray's half-century in music has been marked by unwavering commitment. Despite early struggles with record deals, including his debut album's delayed release and his label's bankruptcy, Cray persevered, driven by a singular dedication to his craft. This integrity has earned him five Grammy Awards, induction into the Blues Hall of Fame, and the respect of countless musical luminaries.

Cray's rise, much like his music, was a slow burn. After gaining local hero status and even appearing in the film Animal House, his 1983 album Bad Influence established him internationally. His standing grew with False Accusations and the acclaimed collaboration Showdown! with Albert Collins and Johnny Copeland. However, it was 1986's Strong Persuader that catapulted him to superstardom, making him the first blues/soul artist to break through in the MTV era. This album's success not only brought him global recognition, a Rolling Stone cover, and a Grammy, but also paved the way for other blues and soul artists, including John Lee Hooker's career resurgence.

Throughout his illustrious career, Robert Cray has collaborated with a who's who of music, from Muddy Waters and B.B. King to The Rolling Stones and Eric Clapton. His unique blend of stinging guitar and soulful vocals, coupled with his exceptional band-leading skills, cements his legacy as a keeper of the American roots music flame. His recent albums, including the masterful That's What I Heard, demonstrate his continued artistic growth and unwavering commitment to making deeply felt, distinctive music. With 19 studio albums and five Grammys, Cray remains as fresh and dedicated as ever, simply fortunate to be doing what he loves.

Kashus Culpepper BIO:
Alabama-born country crooner Kashus Culpepper encompasses the sound of the South. A student and reverent purveyor of Southern music – country, soul, blues, folk, and rock – Culpepper’s husky, sandpaper growl bellows like a freight train over self-penned stories that are as raw and real as they are haunting. Finding his voice in church as young as five years old, it wasn’t until 2020’s global pandemic that Culpepper went from listener to performer, picking up a guitar and learning cover songs to play at barrack bonfires in Rota, Spain during his deployment with the Navy. Covers soon became originals, and once he landed home on U.S. shores, Kash played dive bars up and down the Mississippi Gulf Coast, making a name for himself with the fresh-yet-reminiscent sound that oozes from his very being. Crashing into prominence now, Culpepper has already sold-out headline club shows and opened sound pioneers like Charles Wesley Godwin, Charley Crockett, and Leon Bridges. With Nashville taking notice, Culpepper found a musical home at Big Loud Records, and has released songs including: “Broken Wing Bird (feat. Sierra Ferrell), “Southern Man (feat. Marcus King),” “Man Of His Word,” “Jenni,” and “After Me?” Kashus has received significant early acclaim including being named one of GRAMMY.com’s 25 Artists to Watch in 2025, Apple Music Zane Lowe’s 25 Artists for ’25, and a 2025 Amazon Music Bonfire Artist to Watch, with John Mayer praising him as "as good as it gets."

Madeleine Peyroux

Madeleine Peyroux

Much like songbird Edith Piaf, Madeleine Peyroux spent her teenage years busking the busy streets of Paris. Just like the ‘little sparrow’, Madeleine befriended the city’s street musicians and made its Latin quarter her first performing stage. Years later, Peyroux would cite iconic Piaf as an influence on her music and record a rendition of the classic La Vie En Rose, soulfully capturing the tune’s romanticism and melancholy.

Born in Athens, Georgia in 1974, Madeleine “grew up in a house filled with music” and from an early age “instinctively realized music’s soothing power” but it was her teenage years in the French capital that turned the childhood notion into an all-consuming vocation for life.

Young Madeleine moved to Paris with her mother in 1987 following her parents’ divorce. “To soothe me during the upheaval”, she recalls, “I was given a guitar and took to playing in the streets almost immediately.”

The curious teenager started skipping school to frequent the city’s Latin Quarter where street musicians dwelled, keen to learn about their music and way of life. At 16, the fearless teen joined the Lost Wandering Blues and Jazz Band with whom she toured the streets of Europe, discovering Bessie Smith and Billie Holiday while “voraciously picking up all the songs and all the guitar playing” she could.

The two-year touring adventure set Madeleine on a creative path for life and proved to be a gateway to greater things. In 1991 the band travelled to New York where Madeleine’s unique talents were spotted by Atlantic Records’ Yves Beauvais. The young singer declined the music executive’s initial record deal offer but relented several years later and in 1996 her breakthrough album Dreamland was released.

Dreamland sold a striking 200,000 copies and Madeleine’s dusky voice was likened to that of Jazz greats Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald. Featuring top musicians Marc Ribot, Vernon Reid, Cyrus Chestnut, Charlie Giordano, Greg Cohen, Kenny Wollesen, Regina Carter, Leon Parker and James Carter, the album included Madeleine’s renditions of Holiday’s Gettin' Some Fun Out of Life, Bessie Smith’s Lovesick Blues and Fats Waller’s I'm Gonna Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter.

Dreamland cemented Madeleine Peyroux as a ‘classic’ musical talent that was here to stay, and the soulful singer found herself touring the world, singing with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra and opening for Cesaria Evora.

Extensive touring took its toll on Madeleine’s voice and Jazz’s new star failed to complete recording sessions for her second Atlantic record. Unable to “make money without singing”, Madeleine made several futile attempts at odd jobs, and soon “went into hibernation”.

The new millennium signaled new hope with a return to the Big Apple and a Sony Records deal but the collaboration was short lived. Madeleine was dropped from the label in a move she remembers as casting a “big blow” to her ego.

The defiant artist rolled up her sleeves, continued playing on the street, booked herself in New York clubs through local promoters who remembered her Dreamland heyday and began collaborating with William Galison.

Madeleine’s never-say-die spirit bore fruit. In 2003 she signed to Rounder Records and embarked on a game-changing, lifelong collaboration with multi-Grammy winning producer Larry Klein (Joni Mitchell, Walter Becker, Herbie Hancock).

The prolific partnership has now spanned many years and created universally acclaimed albums, hailed by many as timeless classics.

Careless Love (2004) was a rich collection of cover versions with tunes from Bob Dylan to James P Johnson, and included Peyroux’s milestone rendition of Leonard Cohen’s Dance Me to the End of Love. For the sole original on the album, producer Klein and Jesse Harris co-wrote Madeleine’s signature tune and many fans’ favorite, Don’t Wait Too Long. With sales of half a million copies the album shifted Peyroux from the exclusive Jazz realm into the mainstream arena.

Madeleine went on to collaborate with Klein on her 2006 album Half the Perfect World, and Bare Bones in 2009, her first try at an album of entirely new compositions.

In 2011 Madeleine interrupted her Klein collaboration streak with Standing On the Rooftop, produced by Craig Street. Aside from renditions of Lennon/McCartney’s Martha My Dear, and Dylan’s, I Threw It All Away it was mostly new material including The Kind You Can’t Afford written with The Stones’ own Bill Wyman.

In 2013, Madeleine released The Blue Room, her and Larry Klein’s sensuous tribute to Ray Charles’s iconic album Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music. The Blue Room included tracks from the 1962 timeless original as well as Ray Charles’s distinctive style applied to contemporary songs, all masterfully accompanied by Vince Mendoza’s mesmerizing string arrangements. Helik Hadar’s tonally nuanced perfection earned a Grammy nomination for Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical.

She self-produced her next album, Secular Hymns, in 2016, recorded live at a church in Oxfordshire, England. A collaboration with her touring trio, guitarist Jon Herington (Steely Dan) and bassist Barak Mori (Avishai Cohen) the album features an eclectic mix of Jazz, soul, dub and blues, with covers of Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Townes Van Zandt and Willie Dixon.

In 2019, Madeleine released Anthem, her next collaboration with Klein. Reflecting on the contemporary political conversation, Anthem featured all new songs (excepting the title track by Leonard Cohen), co-written with Larry Klein, guitarist and lyricist David Baerwald, organist Patrick Warren and drummer Brian MacLeod.

Thirty years after her formative busking days Peyroux is the proud curator of nine beguiling albums and an accomplished performer with sell out worldwide tours under her belt. Her atmospheric version of Serge Gainsborough’s La Javanaise was used in the soundtrack of Oscar Winner The Shape of Water and her countless accolades include the coveted BBC International Artist Of The Year honor.

Madeleine’s thirst for creative exploration is unfading and her willingness to face creative challenges remains as solid now as it was three decades ago.

With endearing passion and great curiosity, the unstoppable genre-defying virtuoso continues her search for the good and examines life with the treasured William Congreve belief that Music has charms to soothe the savage beast.

Madeleine might attribute her success to “mostly luck” but to the industry and loyal fans alike, it is the immense talent and utter dedication to her craft that shines through.

“Peyroux is a tremendous talent and almost a total intuitive” reflects Larry Klein, “she has the capacity to get the magic. When she sings and plays her guitar, great things happen.”

———

2023 finds the prolific musician continuing her world tour around the 2021 release of Careless Love Deluxe Anniversary Edition. As part of Rounder’s 50th Anniversary celebrations, the label is offering a re-release Deluxe Edition of the 2004 album with additional live performance material to be released worldwide on 21 August 2021.

Peyroux’ Careless Love Forever World Tour, begun in September of 2021 continues into 2023 with several more performances in the US, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and South America.

Madeleine is debuting her new symphony program with performances beginning in April in the US and extending through the summer into fall of 2023 with several more to be added to her 2024 touring season.

Sheep Bridge Jumpers

Sheep Bridge Jumpers

The Sheep Bridge Jumpers always have been a group of friends coming together to create music and not take themselves too seriously. Inspired by their experiences growing up in Idaho in the Wood River Valley, their indie folk sound can range from lyric driven melodies, to indie and punk inspired songs, to slow emotional heart wrenching ballads. The trumpet, violin, electric guitar, and sometimes synth, adds texture to their indie folk landscape. Their lyrics will likely have you singing and dancing along.

This last couple years the Sheep Bridge Jumpers decided it was time to make music a priority in all of their lives. Spurred by a lack of band community in the pandemic years, each realized that music is such a large part of each of their lives, their goals were many; To come together to rebuild the band they love was number one, and to play more shows throughout Idaho and beyond; in turn further contributing to the music scene locally was number two. With that has come the writing of new music, the ambition to record an album that they plan to release late spring 2025, as well as the goal to use the band as a place to commune, heal and grow individually and musically.

Each of the members is unique to the sound and feel of the Sheep Bridge Jumpers. Cam Bouiss (Drums) formerly of Finn Riggins, is the backbone of the band and brings intricacy and ingenuity into the driving, yet at times, tender folk rhythms lying beneath. Connor Wade (Violin & Vocals) adds a dreamy soundscape and beautiful texture filled with deep reverberating harmonic tones, and on occasion sharp staccato plucking leading the listener into their melodies. Mark Oliver (Guitar & Vocals) brings his punk rhythms and heartfelt lyrics to many of SBJ's songs. Singing at times of lost love, glory, destruction, faith and failure, his words are crisp and heartfelt leaving those paying attention thinking about the stories told. With the new addition of Pat Sebastian, of Howling Squirrel, on Bass and Mariah Priddy, of Makayla King, singing. The occasional lead guitar or mandolin of Antonio Vazquez (Tylor and the Train Robbers rounding out their lineup.

With a name like Sheep Bridge Jumpers one can assume they are just an Americana Bluegrass band, but they are anything but that leaning into their indie folk feel. You may want to dance, you may want to sing along, you may want to sit in the back and take in a good story. One thing is for sure, when you listen to the Sheep Bridge Jumpers, you will feel it.

The band—Keith Roberts (vocals/guitar), Chas Waltz (Violin/keys/vocals), Justin Pecot (guitar/vocals), Dave Ingraham (drums), and Ethan Jones (bass)—has returned to the road post-pandemic with renewed energy. They are committed to bringing their unique fusion of Celtic and rock music to audiences worldwide, reminding everyone "how important a good gig can be to our sanity."

For this new album, The Young Dubliners are taking a different approach to funding, opting to involve their fans directly rather than a traditional record label. As Keith Roberts explains, "The business has changed so much over our lifetime that it no longer makes sense for us to take money from a label and then owe it all back. Making all our supporters co-producers is a far more rewarding way to make a record and allows us to maintain control all the way."

Having released nine albums previously, The Young Dubliners have a notable history, including appearances on Jimmy Kimmel Live, songs featured in TV shows like Sons of Anarchy, and extensive tours opening for diverse artists from Collective Soul to Jethro Tull. While often labeled "Celtic Rock," their sound is a rich hybrid. Despite Keith Roberts' Irish roots, the band's musical influences are broad, reflecting the varied backgrounds of its members and ensuring a dynamic, evolving sound where "the Celtic riffs can just as easily come from the American band members."

A Very Special Evening With Karla Bonoff

Karla Bonoff, a Southern California native, embarked on her songwriting journey at 15. She initially formed a duo, "The Daughters of Chester P," with her sister. Later, she co-founded Bryndle, an early songwriter group alongside Kenny Edwards, Wendy Waldman, and Andrew Gold. Although their first album remained unreleased, Bonoff's talent quickly gained recognition when Linda Ronstadt recorded three of her songs.

This success propelled Bonoff into a solo career in 1977, where she achieved hits like "I Can't Hold On" and "Personally." She toured globally, garnering critical acclaim for her songwriting and performances. Her collaborations extended to a Grammy-winning duet, "All My Life," with Aaron Neville, further cementing her status as a respected artist.

Bryndle eventually reunited, releasing two albums that showcased their unique collaborative songwriting approach. Karla Bonoff continues to be an active force in music, performing and recording, maintaining her passionate audience and legacy.

Love Loss & What I Wore Written by Nora Ephron & Delia Ephron

This summer Argyros Presents in partnership with Sawtooth Productions brings the critically acclaimed play, "Love, Loss, and What I Wore," to the Tierney Theater.

Based on Ilene Beckerman's bestselling book, "Love, Loss, and What I Wore" is a poignant and humorous tapestry woven from monologues and ensemble pieces. It delves into the lives of women through the lens of their clothing and the memories attached to them, exploring universal themes of mothers, prom dresses, the trials of buying bras, the perplexing dislike of purses, and the enduring mystery of why we so often gravitate towards black.

As one critic aptly put it, "So funny and so powerful; so dear and sweet; so remindful of our female wiles, our worries, our insecurities, our remembrances of mother, father, sisters, brothers, lovers—I think it can’t miss.” This production promises to be a relatable and deeply resonant experience for all.

Billy Bob Thornton & The Boxmasters

Billy Bob Thornton & The Boxmasters

Formed in 2007, The Boxmasters have recorded an impressive and diverse catalogue of music that touches on their love of a wide array of influences, but most importantly, the rock and roll of the 1960’s. Listening to The Boxmasters, one can hear obvious odes to the Beatles, Byrds and Beach Boys, but also important to The Boxmasters are The Mothers of Invention, Kris Kristofferson, John Prine and Big Star.

Since forming The Boxmasters, several long-time friends have contributed to the sound of the band, but the core of The Boxmasters has always been Andrew and Thornton. As primary songwriters, the sound of the Boxmasters has been an evolution as the duo constantly strive to find new inspiration, new sounds and new ways of expressing what is in their hearts and on their minds. But at the core, there is a backbeat, a lyric with meaning and music played with emotion.

As a touring band, The Boxmasters have cultivated a rabid cult fanbase across the United States and Canada. Opening for the likes of ZZ Top, Steve Miller and Los Lobos, The Boxmasters have proven to win over large audiences. As a headliner, frequent stops in Kansas City at “Knuckleheads”, Springfield, Illinois at “Boondocks” and “Merrimack Hall” in Huntsville, Alabama have shown dedicated yet still growing audiences. Two appearances at Levon Helm’s “Midnight Ramble” in Woodstock, New York were highlight performances for the band, as well as the “Ramble at The Ryman” that Levon hosted in 2008. The Boxmasters performed on “The Grand Ole Opry” in 2015, another in a growing resume of must-play venues.

Béla Fleck & The Flecktones

Béla Fleck & The Flecktones

Groundbreaking banjoist, composer and bandleader, Béla Fleck has reconvened the original line-up of the Grammy-winning quartet ‘Béla Fleck & The Flecktones‘, with pianist/harmonica player Howard Levy back in the fold alongside Fleck, bassist Victor Wooten, and percussionist/ Drumitarist Roy “Futureman” Wooten. While all manners of genres come into play—from classical and jazz to bluegrass and African music to electric blues and Eastern European folk dances—the result is an impossible to pigeonhole sound all their own, a meeting of musical minds that remains, as ever, utterly indescribable. Simply put, it is The Flecktones, the music made only when these four individuals come together.

“What I needed,” replied banjo innovator Fleck when asked about the inception of Béla Fleck & The Flecktones, “were people that were kind of freaks. Each person had to be an equal or more, and that’s what made it work when I ran into these guys and we started playing together.”

In 1988, Fleck formed the group for a single performance on PBS’ Lonesome Pine Special, and began touring in 1989. “The band is a creative idealistic project, one that somehow connects with people in a profound way,” says Fleck. “Nothing about any of that has changed in over 30 years. The Flecktones are touring for the sheer love of playing and celebrating our friendship. That’s why we get together these days.”
